D2R Ladder Start Strategy: The Complete Season 16 Guide From Level 1 to Hell Farming

A fresh ladder is the most level playing field Diablo II: Resurrected ever offers. Everyone starts at level 1 with an empty stash, there's no economy yet, and the players who plan their first week well end up with Spirit swords, Insight mercenaries and their first high runes while others are still stuck in Nightmare.

Ladder Season 16 starts on Friday, November 13 at 5:00 PM PST (Saturday 02:00 CET / 03:00 EET) with Patch 3.4, so now is the time to plan.

This is our complete ladder start playbook: what to do before launch, how to choose a starter, the fastest route through Normal, which quests you must never skip, the exact runewords to build at each level, how to set up your mercenary, where to farm once you reach Hell, and how Reign of the Warlock's Terror Zones, Heralds and Sunder Charms fit into the first week. It's long on purpose. Bookmark it and use the sections you need.

Quick Overview: The Ladder Start in Five Steps

  1. Before launch: pick a starter and a backup, empty your old stash tabs, and decide whether you're playing solo or with friends.
  2. Normal (levels 1 to about 40): move fast, take every skill point and stat bonus, and don't farm. Speed is everything.
  3. Nightmare (about 40 to 60 or higher): get your first real runewords (Spirit, Insight, Lore, Stealth, Rhyme) and an Act 2 Nightmare mercenary.
  4. Hell (60+): fix your resistances, then start a short farming loop: Countess for runes, plus Andariel, Mephisto, Pindleskin and the Ancient Tunnels for items.
  5. The rest of the first week: Terror Zones, Heralds, Chaos Sanctuary and Baal runs for experience and high-level loot, and trading your duplicates while prices are at their highest.
D2R ladder start first week plan: Normal, Nightmare, Hell and farming milestones

Before the Ladder Starts

The work you do before November 13 decides how smooth your first night is.

  • Empty your old "Past" stash tabs. When Season 15 ends on November 9, any Season 14 items still sitting in your withdraw-only shared stash tabs are lost for good. Log in with a Non-Ladder character and move them out. Our Season 15 ending guide walks through it.
  • Choose a starter and a backup. The first character carries the whole ladder start, so choose something safe and self-sufficient. Have a second class in mind for when you want a farmer or a different playstyle.
  • Decide solo or group. A group of two or three friends levels much faster: one can rush the others through acts, and you can split farming targets. Solo players should focus on the most self-sufficient builds (see below).
  • Write down your skill and stat plan. At 2 a.m. on launch night you don't want to be guessing which skill gets the next point.
  • Know the launch time in your time zone: 5:00 PM PST on Friday, November 13, which is 8:00 PM EST, 01:00 GMT, 02:00 CET and 03:00 EET on Saturday. Being online at the start matters less than having a plan, but the first hours are when the most valuable early runes change hands.

Choosing Your Starter Class

The best ladder starter is the one that can reach Hell and farm safely with almost no gear. Our Season 15 tier list remains the best reference, because Patch 3.4 changes items, not class skills. Here's how the top picks play at ladder start.

Blizzard Sorceress: the safest choice

The classic for a reason. Sorceress levels with fire or lightning early, picks up Teleport at level 18 (which makes every act dramatically faster) and Blizzard at 24, - here you can respec your skills and stats and only level the cold skills + static field, teleport and warmth - 1 point each, then becomes a strong magic-find character with very little gear. She kills Andariel, Mephisto and Pindleskin safely, which is exactly what you want in the first week. Her main weakness is cold-immune monsters, which a good mercenary covers.

First upgrades: a Spirit sword, Lore helm, Stealth armor, then Skin of the Vipermagi, Harlequin Crest and Mara's Kaleidoscope once you can afford them.

Hammerdin (Blessed Hammer Paladin): the best all-rounder

Blessed Hammer becomes available at level 18 and, combined with Concentration (also level 18) and Vigor, clears most of the game quickly. Hammers deal magic damage, which almost nothing is immune to, so the Hammerdin is one of the best builds for Chaos Sanctuary and Baal runs. The catch is speed: without Teleport (from Enigma, much later) he walks, so he's slower at targeted boss farming than a Sorceress.

Javazon (Lightning Amazon): the fastest clearer once geared

Javazons level with Power Strike and Charged Strike, then Lightning Fury at level 30 makes clearing packs extremely fast. She needs a bit more gear than a Sorceress to feel safe, and lightning-immune monsters are a real obstacle in Hell without an Infinity mercenary. She's a great second character or a group starter.

Fire Warlock: the Reign of the Warlock option

The Warlock levels well with fire. A popular route (from Icy Veins' leveling build) is Miasma Bolt for the first few levels, Ring of Fire from about level 6, Flame Wave from about 18, and Apocalypse from about 30. Fire can struggle against fire-immune monsters in late Nightmare, which is why many players respec into a Magic or demon-summoning setup around level 49. Check our Warlock tier list for endgame options.

Summon or Bone Necromancer: the safest solo option

Skeletons do the fighting while you stay at a distance, which makes the Necromancer almost impossible to kill early. Raise Skeleton, Amplify Damage and Corpse Explosion carry you through Normal, and Bone Spear (level 18) or Bone Spirit (level 30) builds become strong once you have +skills.

Whirlwind Barbarian: the budget melee pick

Whirlwind arrives at level 30. Bloodletter got 20% Faster Run/Walk in Patch 3.3, so dual Bloodletters make a fast, cheap leveling setup. Patch 3.4 also gave Demonhorn's Edge +1 to Barbarian skills and 20% Increased Attack Speed. Barbarians shine later with Grief, and they provide Battle Orders for the whole group.

Short version: solo and want the smoothest start? Blizzard Sorceress or Necromancer. In a group, or want the best all-round clearer? Hammerdin. Want to farm high-level areas fast later? Javazon. If you'd rather skip the gearing grind, our Blizzard Sorceress, Hammerdin, Javazon and Fire Warlock build bundles include everything a character needs.

Normal Difficulty: Speed Over Everything

In Normal, the only goal is to reach Nightmare as fast as possible. Normal monsters drop almost nothing worth keeping, so don't stop to farm. Pick up gold, potions, any socketed items and runes, and keep moving.

Act 1

  • Den of Evil: clear it for a free skill point. It's right next to camp; do it immediately.
  • Sisters' Burial Grounds (Blood Raven): completing it lets you hire a mercenary for free. Any mercenary helps early on.
  • Tools of the Trade (Horadric Malus): Charsi's reward is a free Imbue, which turns a normal (white) item into a rare. Save it for a useful item, such as a circlet, belt, gloves or a class-specific item, rather than using it straight away.
  • Countess (Forgotten Tower): she always drops runes. In Normal they're low runes, but they're exactly the ones you need for Steel or Stealth.
  • Kill Andariel and move on.

Act 2

  • Radament's Lair: gives a Book of Skill, another free skill point.
  • Collect the Horadric Staff parts, kill the Summoner and Duriel, and leave. Hire an Act 2 mercenary here if you're a caster; we'll come back to the best type below.

Act 3

  • The Golden Bird: rewards a potion of +20 permanent life.
  • Lam Esen's Tome: gives +5 stat points.
  • Gather all 3 organs as fast as possible
  • Get Khalim's Will by killing the High Council monsters in Travincal to break the Compelling Orb, then kill Mephisto. Skip optional side quests that don't give permanent rewards.

Act 4

  • The Fallen Angel (Izual): gives 2 skill points.
  • Hell's Forge: destroy the Mephisto Soulstone for a reward of gems and a rune.
  • Kill Diablo.

Act 5

  • Rescue on Mount Arreat is the second quest of Act V, and its optional but really good to do, because it rewards you with the runes Ral Ort Tal.
  • Siege on Harrogath: Larzuk's reward is a free socket service. In Normal, use it on a base you'll actually use. Many players save it for a Nightmare or Hell item.
  • Prison of Ice (Anya): gives a scroll of +10 to all resistances. It's worth taking in every difficulty, because those resistances add up, and rescuing Anya also opens the red portal to Pindleskin.
  • Rite of Passage (the Ancients): you need to be level 20 in Normal (40 in Nightmare, 60 in Hell) to start the fight. Defeating them gives a big chunk of experience.
  • Kill Baal. You're in Nightmare.

Getting rushed

If you have a friend with a stronger character, being "rushed" (taken through quests and boss kills while you stay safe) saves hours. The biggest wins are being rushed straight to Baal for each difficulty, and joining Tristram, Tomb, Cow or Baal runs in a full party for fast experience. If you're rushed, remember you still need to complete the reward quests yourself, such as Den of Evil, Radament, the Golden Bird, Lam Esen, Izual and Anya.

Don't have a rusher, or don't want to spend launch week leveling? Our leveling service can take a fresh character up for you. See for example level 1 to 80.

Every Quest Reward You Shouldn't Skip

These rewards are permanent and repeat in each difficulty, so over three difficulties they add up to a big chunk of your character's power:

  • Skill points: Den of Evil (1), Radament (1) and Izual (2), so 4 per difficulty and 12 in total.
  • Stats: Lam Esen's Tome, +5 stat points per difficulty (15 in total).
  • Life: the Golden Bird potion, +20 life per difficulty (60 in total).
  • Resistances: Anya's scroll, +10 to all resistances per difficulty (30 in total).
  • Services: Charsi's Imbue and Larzuk's socket, once per difficulty each.

The Runeword Ladder: What to Build at Each Level

Runewords are how a fresh character gets strong fast. The trick is building each one the moment you reach its level requirement. A runeword can't be worn until you meet the requirement of its highest rune.

D2R early ladder runeword cheat sheet with runes, level requirements and base items

Early levels (13 to 21)

  • Steel (Tir + El, level 13): a 2-socket sword, axe or mace. A strong early melee weapon.
  • Malice (Ith + El + Eth, level 15): a 3-socket melee weapon. Its open wounds and defence reduction are good early on.
  • Stealth (Tal + Eth, level 17): 2-socket body armor with 25% Faster Run/Walk, 25% Faster Cast Rate and 25% Faster Hit Recovery. The best early armor for almost every build.
  • Leaf (Tir + Ral, level 19): a 2-socket staff with +3 to fire skills, a huge boost for fire-leveling Sorceresses.
  • Ancients' Pledge (Ral + Ort + Tal, level 21): a 3-socket shield with big resistances.
  • Zephyr (Ort + Eth, level 21): a 2-socket bow for Amazons.

The big three (25 to 27)

  • Spirit (Tal + Thul + Ort + Amn, level 25): a 4-socket sword or shield with +2 to all skills, 25–35% Faster Cast Rate and 55% Faster Hit Recovery. The best caster weapon for a long time, and it stays useful all the way to endgame. A 4-socket Crystal Sword is the classic base. Paladins can also use a 4-socket Paladin shield.
  • Insight (Ral + Tir + Tal + Sol, level 27): a 4-socket polearm or staff with a Meditation aura. Give it to your Act 2 mercenary in a polearm and your mana problems disappear.
  • Lore (Ort + Sol, level 27): a 2-socket helm with +1 to all skills. A cheap, strong helm until you find a Harlequin Crest.

Mid levels (29 to 47)

  • Rhyme (Shael + Eth, level 29): a 2-socket shield. Cannot Be Frozen and good resistances, which is very important in Hardcore. We stock it in a Kite Shield.
  • Peace (Shael + Thul + Amn, level 29): body armor for Amazons.
  • Black (Thul + Io + Nef, level 35): a 3-socket club, hammer or mace for melee builds and mercenaries.
  • Smoke (Nef + Lum, level 37): 2-socket armor with +50 to all resistances. It fixes your resistances when you reach Hell.
  • Treachery (Shael + Thul + Lem, level 43): a top choice for an Act 2 mercenary.
  • Duress (Shael + Um + Thul, level 47): a strong melee armor.

The endgame goals (53+)

These need high runes, which are scarce in the first weeks of any ladder:

  • Heart of the Oak (Ko + Vex + Pul + Thul, level 55): a flail or mace for casters.
  • Call to Arms (Amn + Ral + Mal + Ist + Ohm, level 57): Battle Orders for everyone.
  • Grief (Eth + Tir + Lo + Mal + Ral, level 59) and Fortitude (El + Sol + Dol + Lo, level 59).
  • Infinity (Ber + Mal + Ber + Ist, level 63), the mercenary weapon that breaks immunities. Chains of Honor (Dol + Um + Ber + Ist, level 63).
  • Enigma (Jah + Ith + Ber, level 65), which gives Teleport to any class.
  • Eternity (Amn + Ber + Ist + Sol + Sur). New in Patch 3.4, it can be made in 5-socket missile weapons as well as melee weapons (Online Ladder and Offline, Reign of the Warlock only), with +30% attack speed and 300–390% enhanced damage.

Finding the right base items

  • Use white (normal-quality) items only. Magic, rare and unique items can't hold runewords. "Superior" white items with bonus defence or damage are the best bases.
  • Socket count must match exactly. A 3-socket armor can't hold Stealth (2 runes). Use the right number of sockets for each runeword.
  • Vendors are a great source. In Nightmare, vendors regularly sell 4-socket Crystal Swords (for Spirit) and 4-socket polearms (for Insight). Re-entering the game refreshes their stock.
  • Larzuk can add sockets. His socket quest adds the maximum number of sockets an item can have, which on a white item depends on its item level.
  • Never sell or drop good bases in the first week. Elite bases with the right socket count, like Monarch shields, Archon Plates and Dusk Shrouds, are worth a lot once players have the runes for endgame runewords.

Your Mercenary: the Most Underrated Part of a Ladder Start

A well-geared mercenary is like having a second character. For most builds, the best choice is an Act 2 desert mercenary hired in Nightmare, because Nightmare is the only difficulty where Act 2 mercenaries come with these auras:

  • Nightmare "Defensive": Holy Freeze. Slows every nearby enemy. Great for casters and for safety.
  • Nightmare "Offensive": Might. Boosts physical damage. Great for melee and physical builds.
  • Nightmare "Combat": Thorns. Rarely chosen.
  • In Normal and Hell, Act 2 mercenaries come with Prayer, Defiance or Blessed Aim instead. Hire one in Normal to help you level, and swap to a Nightmare one as soon as you can.

Gearing the mercenary: Insight in a polearm first (solves your mana), then a good body armor such as Smoke or Treachery, and later Infinity for builds that fight immune monsters. If you want your mercenary ready on day one, our Ladder Start Mercenary Pack, Insight Mercenary Pack and Infinity Mercenary Pack cover each stage.

Nightmare and Hell: Resistances Are Everything

Each new difficulty lowers all of your resistances: −40 in Nightmare and −100 in Hell. That's the moment many fresh characters suddenly start dying. Aim to reach the cap of 75% fire, cold and lightning resistance in Hell as quickly as you can, and keep poison resistance reasonable.

  • Anya's scroll (+10 all resistances) in Nightmare and Hell.
  • Smoke armor (+50 all), Ancients' Pledge or Rhyme shields, and resistance jewels and charms.
  • Uniques like Skin of the Vipermagi (casters) and Mara's Kaleidoscope.
  • The Ancients need level 40 in Nightmare and 60 in Hell, so plan your level around them.

Patch 3.4 budget upgrades worth knowing: Isenhart's Armory as a full set now gives 30% Faster Run/Walk and 25% Faster Hit Recovery. Isenhart's Case adds +25% Magic Resistance, Isenhart's Horns 5% life steal, and Isenhart's Parry +15% cold and fire resistance as part of a 2-piece set bonus. Silks of the Victor picks up 20% Faster Run/Walk, 30% attack speed and 15% magic find. Veil of Steel now has +2 to all skills and 15–25% physical damage reduction. These are mostly cheap items, so they can be found or bought early. The full list is in our Season 16 Patch 3.4 guide.

Where to Farm in the First Week

Once you can survive in Hell, start a short farming loop. Each target has a job.

Countess: guaranteed runes

The Countess on the 5th floor of the Forgotten Tower (Act 1) always drops runes.

Andariel, Mephisto and Pindleskin: items

  • Andariel (Act 1) is fast and drops good early uniques.
  • Mephisto (Act 3) is the classic Sorceress magic-find target. Teleport to the Durance of Hate level 3 and kill him.
  • Pindleskin (Act 5) sits right outside the red portal at the start of Nihlathak's Temple, opened by rescuing Anya. He's the fastest run in the game.

Ancient Tunnels, Chaos Sanctuary and Baal: experience and drops

The Ancient Tunnels under the Lost City (Act 2) are a level 85 area in Hell, so anything can drop there, and it's a great magic-find spot for characters that can handle its monsters. Chaos Sanctuary (Diablo) and Baal runs in a group are still the classic experience routes from level 60 onwards.

Secret Cow Level

After killing Baal in a difficulty, put Wirt's Leg (from Tristram) and a Tome of Town Portal in the Horadric Cube in Act 1 to open the Cow Level. It's packed with monsters, great for groups and for finding bases for runewords.

Terror Zones, Heralds and Sunder Charms (Reign of the Warlock)

Terror Zones are often the best experience and loot in the game once you're set up:

  • Monsters scale with you. In a terrorized zone, normal monsters are raised to 2 levels above the game creator's level, champions +4 and uniques +5, up to a cap per difficulty (base monsters up to level 45 in Normal, 71 in Nightmare and 96 in Hell). That makes even early zones worthwhile for experience and drops.
  • Zones rotate every 30 minutes, and in Reign of the Warlock every terrorized monster also gets a random extra affix each game, such as Extra Strong or Cold Enchanted, so they're tougher than they look.
  • Heralds can appear after you kill champion and unique monsters in a Terror Zone. Chase them down: each one you defeat raises the tier of the next (up to Tier 5), and Heralds are the source of Latent Sunder Charms, which let your build break a monster immunity.
  • Patch 3.3 changes still apply: Latent Sunder Charms have a minimum drop level of 75, drop less often with Magic Find, and when found through Magic Find, only drop in Hell. Herald Tier 3+ monsters have a better chance at rare-or-better items.
  • Worldstone Shards drop from elite monsters and terrorize every zone in a chosen act for your game, which is perfect for grinding an act you like.
  • The Uber Ancients: collect statues from terrorized act bosses and combine them in the Horadric Cube to fight the three Barbarian Ancients for top-tier loot. This is endgame content, not week-one content.

Our Terror Zones & Sunder Charms guide covers the best zones and Herald strategy in detail.

The First Week, Day by Day

A rough plan for a focused player. Everyone moves at a different pace, so treat these as goals, not deadlines.

  • Launch night: clear Normal, reach levels 25–30, collect every reward quest and build Stealth. If possible, get rushed into Nightmare.
  • Day 1–2: Nightmare. Build Spirit and Lore, hire an Act 2 Nightmare mercenary and give him Insight. Farm the Countess in Nightmare for Io and below. Enter Hell. Fix your resistances with Smoke, Rhyme, Anya's scroll and charms. Start Countess, Andariel and Pindleskin runs.
  • Day 3–7: a full farming loop (Mephisto, the Ancient Tunnels, Terror Zones), Herald hunting and Chaos or Baal runs for experience. Start saving runes towards your first big goal: Infinity, Enigma, Call to Arms or Grief.

Trading and Economy Tips for a New Ladder

  • Everything is worth the most in the first days. Supply is tiny and demand is huge. If you find a high rune or a top unique you don't need, its trading value will probably never be higher.
  • Keep good bases. 4-socket Crystal Swords and polearms, 3-socket and 4-socket elite armors, and Monarch shields sell well once people have runes.
  • Upgrade runes in the Horadric Cube. Three of the same low rune (El up to Ral) make the next rune. From Ort upward, the recipe also needs a gem, and from Pul upward it's two runes plus a gem. It's a slow but steady way to reach the runes you're missing.
  • Don't spend all your runes on early gear. Insight and Spirit are worth every rune. Expensive items you'll outgrow in a day usually aren't.
  • Collect keys and essences. Hell keys from the Countess (Terror), the Summoner (Knowledge) and Nihlathak (Destruction) open the Pandemonium Event later, and its mini-bosses drop the organs that open Uber Tristram. If you'd rather not farm them, we stock 3x3 key sets and organ sets.

Hardcore Ladder Notes

Everything above applies, with three extra rules:

  • Never risk your resistances. Don't move into Hell with negative resistances, even if your damage is enough.
  • Get Rhyme or Ancients Pledge early.
  • Be careful with Terror Zones. The random affixes make even familiar zones dangerous. Leave the game at the first sign of trouble.
